My (grocery) bags are packed, I'm ready to go.

Recently I wrote about how I meet my protein needs when I travel.   On the last trip I took, I didn't bring much food because a) I was flying, and b) I was going to a civilized place (defined as a place with a Whole Foods).  We went to WF several times on that trip, actually.

Well, tomorrow I'm hitting the road for a professional conference.  I'll be gone for three nights, and I know from experience that the town I'm going to -- Ocean City, Maryland -- is a real vegan food desert.  This is especially true in the off season.  There are two restaurants there where I've had decent vegan meals, but I don't know whether either one will be open midweek.  Add in that I'll be very busy trying to act like a grownup, and I won't have my own transportation, and you'll understand why I'm bringing this:

Not the cat.  The cat is staying home.

I've got two liters of unsweetened almond milk, 2 boxes of instant oatmeal, 2 McDougall black bean soup cups, 3 McDougall split pea soup cups, 4 packages of assorted Tasty Bite rice mixtures, a box of single-serve packets of hummus, some hemp protein powder in a container, and two envelopes of raw protein powder Just In Case.  I've also got my Blender Bottle and my electric kettle.  My bamboo eating utensils aren't in the picture, but those are coming along too. I'm also going to bring some carrot sticks -- at least a pound, need to peel and cut those later tonight -- and maybe some apples.  I'm assuming I'll be able to get a mediocre-to-lousy salad wherever I end up.

This is probably a ridiculous amount of food for such a relatively short trip, but the idea of running out of appropriate food makes me very anxious.  So I'm making sure that doesn't happen.  If I have any unopened leftovers, I'll bring them home and save them for the next trip.

  1. I think over packing versus under packing is always the way to go, especially if the food won't go bad and you have the room! Plus, you might make some friends if you have the opportunity to share :D Happy travels!
